The 50/30/20 rule, explained in five minutes
A simple way to split your income so bills get paid, life stays fun and savings actually grow.

Budgeting does not need a spreadsheet with forty rows. The 50/30/20 rule gives every dollar a job in three simple buckets, and it works on almost any income. It is the framework we recommend most often to people who have tried budgeting before and quit after two weeks.
The beauty of the rule is that it is flexible. You are not tracking every coffee. You are making sure the big picture is healthy, and letting the small stuff sort itself out.
How the split works
Start with your take home pay, the amount that actually lands in your account after tax. Then divide it into three groups:
50% for needs: rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, insurance, transport and minimum loan payments.
30% for wants: eating out, streaming, hobbies, trips and anything that makes life more fun.
20% for your future: an emergency fund, investing, retirement and paying debt down faster.
If you earn $4,000 a month after tax, that means $2,000 for needs, $1,200 for wants and $800 for your future. Simple enough to remember without opening an app.
A budget is not a cage. It is permission to spend on the things you care about, guilt free.
When the numbers do not fit
In many cities, rent alone can eat half of a paycheck. That does not mean the rule is broken, it means you adjust it. A 60/20/20 split is a perfectly good starting point, and so is 55/25/20.
Protect the 20 first
If you have to squeeze something, squeeze wants before future. Even 10% saved consistently beats 20% saved once and then forgotten. Move it on payday, before you have a chance to spend it.
Review every three months
Your life changes, so should your split. A raise, a move or a new subscription can shift the balance. A quick quarterly check keeps the plan honest.
