How to build an emergency fund on any salary

Three to six months of expenses sounds impossible. Here is how to get there one small step at a time.

An emergency fund is the difference between a bad week and a bad year. A surprise car repair, a vet bill or a sudden job change is stressful enough without reaching for a credit card at 25% interest.

The usual advice is three to six months of expenses. That number can feel impossible, so here is how to get there one small, realistic step at a time.

Start with one month

Forget the six month target for now. Your first milestone is one month of essential costs: rent, food, utilities and transport. Hitting that first goal builds real momentum, and it already covers most everyday emergencies.

Find the money without feeling it

  • Automate a fixed transfer on payday, even if it is only $25.

  • Turn on round ups so every card payment adds a little extra.

  • Send windfalls like tax refunds or bonuses straight to the fund.

  • Cancel one subscription you forgot about and redirect that amount.

Small amounts, saved automatically, beat big intentions every single time.

Keep it separate, keep it boring

Your emergency fund should live in its own account or goal, away from everyday spending. A high yield savings account is ideal: easy to reach in a real emergency, but not so easy that it quietly becomes vacation money.

What counts as an emergency?

A simple test: is it unexpected, necessary and urgent? A broken laptop you need for work, yes. A flash sale, no. Writing the rule down helps you stick to it when temptation shows up.

Track the progress

In Finura, create a goal called Emergency fund, set your target and watch the progress bar grow. Seeing the number move every week is one of the best motivators there is.
